Contemporary courtyard that welcomes wildlife

This brief was to create a relaxed contemporary courtyard garden that also allows you to be immersed in wildlife.

The mid-century modern furniture resides on a reclaimed sandstone patio approached from two sides by wide, staggered plank paving. The furniture is complemented by the bronzed tones of the corten steel water feature and the timber-top gabion bench, which also contains reclaimed sandstone sourced from the renovation of the house.

The trellis has been attached to the existing boundary fence in order to create a habitat and nesting space for wildlife between the two panels. Bird boxes have been set back into the trellis with evergreen climbers ready to sprawl across the panels and envelope the seating area in year-round greenery.

The planting scheme incorporates evergreen yew cubes, multi-stemmed Amelanchier Lamarckii trees, tall structural grasses and softer perennial planting in hues of white and yellow, creating a relaxed, inviting seating area. The plants have been chosen specifically for their ability to attract wildlife as well as to create year-round interest through foliage, flowers and berries. The vast majority of plants were sourced from local, peat-free nurseries.
