Coastal front garden with sea views

This brief was to create a naturalistic front garden that complemented and framed the beautiful coastal views.

Graduated North Sea cobbles and gravel were used to edge winding self-binding gravel paths, both of which tie in with the textures and tones of the coastal landscape and the minimalist palette of the house itself. These materials were also used to soften the existing hard landscaping of the driveway and main path leading up to the house and to create a different, more relaxed route within the space to wander amongst the planting and take in the sea views.

Plants were chosen to emulate the structure and form of the sand dunes around Seaton Sluice. Due to the coastal conditions, these needed to be salt and wind tolerant, robust in high winds and drought tolerant wherever possible to cope with low rainfall within the area. The clients also requested planting that required little maintenance. Naturalistic matrix planting such as grasses including stipa tennuisima and molinia caerulea 'Edith Dudszus' were used to fill the bulk of the planting beds, making the most of the movement created by coastal winds and providing year-round interest. Additional matrix planting of verbena bonariensis, achillea millefolium, aquilegia vulgaris and scilla siberica provide pops of colour throughout the seasons. Lavender, rosemary and elaeagnus provide evergreen structure.

We also completed a back garden for this project.
