A cottage garden parterre

The brief for this project was to create a cottage garden parterre with a host of pollinator-friendly plants that also allowed for a beautiful view from the newly renovated kitchen.

The parterre was designed using low evergreen yew hedging to act as a border to four planting beds filled with purple, pink and white flowering perennials and an array of year-round bulbs. Climbing roses and lavender have also been positioned on the west-facing wall of the house to provide a wonderful scent when entering the garden and also to add to the relaxed, informal atmosphere of the space.

A central lawned avenue was introduced in order to provide space for children to play and as a means of moving you through the garden into the woodland and courtyard areas towards the back of the garden. A brick path also runs through the centre of the parterre to create a different direction of travel through the space allowing you to fully enjoy the abundance of planting, as well as a service path up the left-hand side providing direct access to a composting area in the back corner of the garden.

A bench has been added to either end of the parterre to take in the views from both perspectives and to be able to follow the sun around the space. A large central pot has been included in the centre of the avenue to act as a focal point.

Project stage: completed May 2021
